Today I got an intricate and perfect birthday card from my brother, mailed with stamps collected by my grandfather. My mom said that Asher spent an entire day making it, and this is the first card he has given me in a long time. We used to have a truly terrible relationship. Family vacations were nearly lethal. I am not making a joke.
We have each grown up some, though, and there is a respect for the other’s life experiences.

Here is a little about my brother: His perfectionism is tedious. His mood is thrown by the slightest upset. He runs with convoluted ideas, skipping that initial step of weighing the likelihood of success. It wears quickly on those of us who love him, because we fear the letdowns like nothing else in our lives. Sometimes his ideas pay off, and we are relieved and a little less sure of our own perspectives on how the world works.

We were best buds before we moved to South Carolina when I was four. Then he turned into a sad little person at the devastating age of seven, and it has only been a few years since we became able to converse genuinely with each other.

I am emotional about few things- most of them somewhat unfitting, like piano music and that Mother’s Day Best Buy commercial that came on during Lost tonight. I would kill for my brother, though. It is like a Whitney Houston song up in those emotions. Like a Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey duet.

These are some of my favorite photos of Asher.
He was so blond.

My grandma loves to knit, but there is no way it was ever cold enough in Florida for this outfit.

While all my friends were playing house, I was ducking Asher’s imaginary bullets and trying to blend in with the shrubs.

On Tuesday, in typical accident fashion, I chipped my tooth by knocking my face against a metal door frame. To be more exact about the effect, I cracked the porcelain veneer of one of the teeth I had already knocked out in a previous accident. Now it is sharp, and I feel very scary. This happened only a week after deciding to join my co-worker’s roller derby league. I have reversed that decision.
So on Tuesday, with a swollen lip and iffy tooth, I began this week’s home school workshop. The day’s theme: cooking. Activities: making fudge and play dough, and growing various types of crystals.
I should have anticipated the avalanche of poop jokes during the fudge making. After all, we started the project just after my co-worker shared that one of her group members had just apologized for being really gassy today. But the jokes started with a simple observation (“This looks like my brother’s poop!”), and quickly sprawled out of control until my two tables of home schoolers were squealing too much to stir their confections.
Some of them even tried to extend their allotment of pooptalk opportunities by making brown play dough.
Later, on the bus home, I watched a lady silently absorb, “Them stockings look good on you,” from a lazy-eyed man with a walker. When she didn’t seem to take to this, he added, “I didn’t even know you was wearin’ ‘em ’til I paid some more attention.” Then he slowly, slowly looked her up and down and grinned. I wanted to shield her.
When I was in South Carolina a couple of weeks ago, Luke and I forgot to buy something at the store, so I just rode out to Piggly Wiggly to pick it up. I got hit on, on my bicycle, by a scraggly old man who rode up beside me and started chatting me up, asking where I was from and if I were married.
I want men to not be creepy? I think it would help a little bit if a beautiful, popular singer came out with a song about how much women hate when random unattractive men start asking personal questions. Something like, “No Scrubs,” but more specific to situations such as those I have just described. That might help a bit, no?
This morning, I am having a latte at Pasha. It is my little gift to myself. I didn’t have a day off last week. I wasn’t going to have one this week, but I worked a double yesterday in exchange for getting my Sunday shift picked up. Sunday will be the best day. Last Sunday was good too, because I had the morning and early afternoon off. I made an excellent brunch of tofu hash, grits and biscuits, which I shared with Luke and Anna. It felt like summer outside, and Anna and I talked about maybe moving to Argentina to do organic farming.

Tonight is Matt’sbirthday celebration! It has been over a month since I have seen he and Jamie, and I am looking forward to partying it up, responsibly- I do have to be in Hixson for a 12 hour day that begins at 9 am.
I am getting my final Hepatitis A shot Monday morning. I think that means I will be good for life with that vaccine.
Even with a damaged mouth, I am excited about the near future. Tonight! Sunday! Maybe Argentina!
I think that today, being nice to all of my tables will be easier.

Tomorrow is local election day!
The mayoral race has been incredibly dull, with the one candidate I was interested in dropping out a month ago. I’m pretty sure about 15% of the population are going to show up at the polls tomorrow. I wish everyone were excited about the political process, so that perhaps one day we will have some promising contenders, instead of…these guys.
Just take a gander at this batch of winners vying for my district’s city council seat.

Hard to believe!
But kind of not.

i am back, from what felt like the dead.
having two jobs, writing personal essays to hopefully secure a graduate assistantship at UTC next fall, volunteering at the ESL class in the mornings, trying to go to the Y, not having a day off in two weeks, cumulatively depleted my energy reservoir, which is why luke and anna are about the only non-customers or -coworkers who have seen or spoken to me in the last three weeks.
i apologize to anyone whose calls or emails i’ve not answered. it was not deliberate- i have simply been too tired to do anything but try to get a decent night of sleep. jamie- i bought you a book. dyana- i sent your recipes. rachel- i should be able to come over for the office soon.
i also have been riding the bus, which gets me places more slowly, but less stressfully.
i’d mentioned my intention to begin utilizing public transportation, but i guess i’ve been on the bus a couple weeks now, and i usually love it. it adds spice to my life. for example, my very first bus ride, i got witnessed to, actually by someone i knew.
and a couple of weeks ago, anna and i saw a movie at the bijou. when we got out of the theatre, i clicked on my phone display and exclaimed, “my bus leaves in two minutes!” then proceeded to speedwalk to 4th & market, at which point i acknowledged the utter importance of making that damn bus by running two of the most visible blocks in downtown chattanooga, clogs a-flopping, ignoring the bearded man outside of Family Dollar encouraging my journey with a, “You go, girl!” i arrived at the stop to see the bus would be a couple of minutes late, so i had time to wheeze and normalize my facial expressions prior to boarding.
most of the other riders aren’t crazy, like you’d think- however, there is the occasional irritable bus driver. yesterday, i asked the female driver a simple question about the route, and instead of answering my question with a “yes” or “no,” she burst into a long-winded tirade about how i should just check the bus schedule instead of asking her, because she is bleeding every which-way and, Lord, is having terrible stomach problems!
the city looks different as a passenger.
today i get a day off, and i couldn’t be happier. after today, i think i will be rested, and i look forward to reentering my social circle.
yesterday, luke and i took advantage of the public library’s semi-annual book sale at northgate mall. i really can’t describe how wonderful it was to buy a paper bag for $3.50, then fill it with approx. twenty books that excite the hell out of me, but i know for sure i’ve never been as pleased with a mall purchase.

my half of the bag

now i am going to do organize, read and do whatever i want for the rest of the day.

I don’t feel like getting a real job. I know I have been planning, for months, to get a 9 to 5. However, I really love waking up as if I had somewhere to go, but then staying in my pajamas, making breakfast, listening to podcasts, and catching up on the news until time to go to one of my part-time jobs. It’s fun!

Anna, Daniel and Sam let me use their oven and utensils from time to time, since the kitchen in the house I share with seven relative strangers has no room for less practical baking equipment. This morning it was pumpkin bread. I like giving things away, and quick breads are usually popular.

I like my new job a lot so far. It is fun having kids around again, and I was really impressed with how smart they are. The kids divided themselves into three groups: Team Taco, the Brainstormers, and Power Functions. In Japan, my kids usually named themselves things like Flower Girls, Cute, Beautiful, Pizza, or Ghost. Sure, there was a language gap, but my immediate reaction to working with these little native English speakers is to be incredibly impressed all the time. But the real reason I like my job, is that I get to wear a lab coat.

Margot is waiting for me to shower. Sometimes it is hard to get going.

Yeah.

I didn’t make any solid resolutions for 2009. It is more like I have several things which I really want to do, so I am trying to keep my motivations unassailable.

I am getting a little, tiny bit better at saving money.

I have been going to the Y at least 3 times a week.

I got a second job: Science Theater Assistant (at the Creative Discovery Museum Science Theater in…Hixson). My job description takes up the better part of a single-spaced page, but I’ll mostly be helping, sometimes leading, workshops and demonstrations for school groups and birthday parties. Tomorrow’s workshop is called Rockin’ Robotics.

I am going to maintain some connection to Japanese culture, by attending the monthly Japanese Language and Culture Meetups. Luke is being a real sport to accompany me to my first meetup this Wednesday. Something about having dinner with a bunch of unfamiliar Asians and Anime geeks intimidates me.

I am going to read. Niedlov’s and Greenlife are my spots.

I am going to try to stop making eye contact with the lady leaving the toilet stall I was waiting on. It makes me feel awkward, because the lady always seems to want to say something like, “I’m sorry I took so long,” or, “Here you are,” or, “I didn’t do that. It was like that when I came in!” All the facial expressions bring me discomfort. So I will try to look at my phone instead, or at least fix my gaze to the side wall.

And finally- and this is a big one- I am going to take public transportation, which, in Chattanooga means the bus. If there is anything that stresses me out more than demanding tables who tip poorly, it is driving my Honda Accord through Chattanooga’s narrow lanes. I am not observant enough to drive with peace and confidence. The bus stop is a block from my house. Also, it is less damaging to the environment to take a bus already in transit. And now I am working 3-4 days a week in Hixson, which is practically like driving to Cleveland but is even worse, because there are two speed detecting cameras and like 78 traffic lights between my house and Northgate Mall. I am buying the monthly pass tomorrow. I feel like I will have some stories.

It is Christmas morning, and I am the first awake, thanks to a built-in excitement alarm. My relations are slowly collecting in the cabin living room, slowly making their breakfast selections, slowly beginning the rugged conversations that thankfully take place only within the periphery of family.

Topics consistently include, and I am not kidding: farting, pooping, something disgusting that happened on my bad aunt’s honeymoon, how much we just generally dislike my bad aunt, being constipated, my brother’s ritual of producing a giant holiday turd, broadway shows, the president/recent presidential candidates, and prank gifts. It is like spending the holiday with five 12-year-old boys (my teenage cousin and I are above all this. We shake our heads, and occasionally scold).

Some recent excerpts:

Me to my mother: “Please keep your privacy under your nightgown.”

Mother to me: “Show me more photos of Lukie!”

Aunt to me: “I’ll pay you five dollars to massage my feet for 15 minutes. Just be careful around my bunion.”

During this time, I also have a lot of questions directed towards me. These often involve my love life, but are otherwise queries into lackluster pots of information such as the population of Chattanooga or the level of satisfaction I obtain from my career at Sticky Fingers.

Christmas has always been with my parents and my mom’s good sister and her husband and daughter. I love this time. I also go completely crazy at several points in the holiday due to the many questions and group activities. This is the family I am closest with, and we see each other just once a year. This year, we are in a cabin near Blue Ridge. There is board game bonanza downstairs, which no one has yet agreed to join me in. Luke is coming tomorrow, and I’m sure he’ll be game.

Let me leave some space for that one. Come back to it later, maybe.

For once, I have actually found decent presents for every member of my family. This Christmas, I went with books. For my dad, a book by Click & Clack. They crack him up. For my mom, a desk calendar with pretty flowers. For my brother, Stuff White People Like. And for my Aunt and Uncle, the book Farts: A Spotter’s Guide. It is funny and actually well-written, but I think the part they will most enjoy is imagining ME purchasing it for them, in an actual store, testing out the audio samples. I got my cousin 4 packs of Pocky, which means she’ll be happy for a week.

Soon we will be opening presents. Several years ago, the elders of my family decided that each person should have an individual present-opening session. I think this is a terrible idea. Structure does not belong in Christmas morning. I want it to be madness, total chaos.

Basically, I want to be a child again, just for the day. Also, I want to and am able to eat a lot of dessert.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

All I want for Christmas is a job and the following books, which I have already bought for myself from my parents (I am going to be crafty in the new year):

Per their request, I began buying my own presents when I started college and was less able to drop hints as to my Christmas wishes. If my parents didn’t have any help, I would probably be getting a miscellaneous collection of 75% off casual summer items from my mom, and a book on personal finance from my dad.

He gave me this book at Thanksgiving to aid my plan to buy a house once I have a job. It also came with a DVD. He swears it is a great book, although obviously, I have my hesitations.

So I’ve got my books, now I just need a job! Easy. Pie. Cake. Shit, I hate that I am still looking for a job and also that this morning I did an assessment for a teller position and passed but was told that there aren’t actually any positions currently available.

Then I made borscht and took a nap. Now I am listening to popular music videos on Youtube, because I am going through a phase.

While scanning the popular video section, I noticed that the video of Bush getting a pair of shoes thrown at him appeared many times and is by far the most watched video. Yesterday I watched a CNN reporter say that she has watched the video over and over and still can’t help but laugh. I have disliked Bush for six years and wanted to throw a shoe or two myself, but really? It’s not funny. It is sad that that is the gut reaction rather than sadness for Iraqi victims’ families, or, hey, even upset that our President was publicly humiliated.

Well, here is something sad in, I think, a better way:

It is okay to laugh.
